How in the world has it been five years?!?! I got to document their first born when she was born, and now, to my immense pleasure, was able to document her sweet little brother. I can’t tell you the joy it brings when I get to photograph a family over and over. To see the changes and growth that comes with time. So many details. So many memories.

As I have pondered what I do over the years, I have realized that when I get my camera out, I have only 2 goals.

1. To create something beautiful to look at
2. To create an images that will trigger emotions and/or memories

For me, the true goal of photography isn’t visual perfection. Rather, it is to be the insurance that the memories will never be forgotten. That the emotions with those memories be felt yet again, over and over, every time the image is seen. Yes, I do want the image to be beautiful, so it is displayed with pride and affection, but most often, when those that live in the home are the only ones to see it every day, I truly just want them to feel and appreciate those moments of a time past, that shouldn’t ever be forgotten.

There is not a greater compliment that can be given to me than someone who has trusted me to document their moments in the past, choosing to come back to me and trust me that same job again. I consider it an immense privilege to be a visual historian, creating personal images of importance for those that are in them.

I can’t share their “now” images without the context of what has come before. <3 A little walk down memory lane…
