Where You Live

Chavez Newborn

I have ALWAYS loved the baby stage.  It seems to me that it is the most honest period of life.  They cry when something is wrong, smile with genuine delight, depend on with complete trust and love unconditionally.  When they are little, life is so simple.  Don’t get me wrong, being parent is HARD, and you may be in a sleep deprived stupor for 5 years straight, but it IS simple.  Nothing is wrong that cant be cured with a nap, snuggles, clean diaper or food.  When they get older all of the sudden you have to correct, instruct and discipline…  I much prefer the part at the very beginning. lol.  That may be why I have 5 kids!

This sweet little peanut was welcomed by 2 big brothers.  She is the youngest, the only girl and their last.  She has no idea of how fiercely she is loved already even though she has been on this earth for such a short time.

You are loved

You are cherished

You are a blessing

6 months old

We had her photo session scheduled for almost a month ago, but between these inconvenient storms we have had in the evenings this month, and ear inflections, we squeaked in her 6 month session at their home just 2 days before she turned 7 months old!!!  I just love it when parents want to document their little ones as they grow.  The change so quickly their first year, and I am always thankful that they value these moments enough to have photos taken before they are gone/grown.

I absolutely love how her eyes light up when she smiles. <3

Huntsville & Madison AL – Family, Children, Newborn, Maternity Photographer – Arab Cattle Farm

OH MY STARS!!!!

This sweet mama contacted me wondering if I would travel to Arab to document her sweet boy in the place he loves the most.  He has the incredible privilege of being raised on a cattle farm, and I was so excited to get to document this little person in the place that will define his childhood in so many ways.

I arrived with an optimistic attitude towards the weather…  Well, it started POURING!  This was literally the only time I have ever had to cancel a session I was actively shooting and reschedule.  I felt so bad (I know how much goes in to getting ready for photos, believe me!!!) but as I looked around their property with the rolling hills and green pastures…  I had gotten some great shots, but we were wet, and I just knew it was what we needed to do.

I am quite pleased to report that round 2 was everything I dreamed it would be!

Sunshine, giggles, exploring, snuggles, squeeze hugs, a pony named Chester and a calf named Sally Sue.  It was absolute perfection!  This little boy is adored completely and the joy he exudes when he is romping around on the family land is something that needs to be bottled up and spread around everywhere.  No cares, no concerns, just happiness that starts in his toes and beams out of his eyes.

There aren’t very many places in North Alabama where you can get a view of the sky like this.  The sunset was amazing and this cute little farmer just made it that much better. <3

Huntsville & Madison Family Children Newborn Lifestyle Photographer Jenni M Photography – One Year

I can’t help but smile as I watch this…  This little man is quite obviously loved beyond measure.  His birthday was such a beautiful afternoon filled with snuggles, giggles, kisses, balloons and complete adoration!  I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed being invited in to document such a special occasion.

There are moments that pass us by in an instant.  Some of them are small, but it seems that the ones that have more weight and sentiment pass just as quickly as the little ones.  Why is that?  I can’t help but feel sad just a little as my own babies grow.  There is so much wonder, innocence and simplicity in these younger years.  It’s not easy by any means.  Too often we as parents absorb the brunt of teething, sniffles and all of the work of parenthood.  It can create a haze that makes the glasses we look at life through a bit hazy and sometimes a little blue.

But then there are those moments that cut through that haze.  They remind us to look back and see how far we have come, and how amazing the journey really is!  That we are actually SUCCEEDING and it’s not because we were the best parents on the block, but because we know our children, and we love them well.

These are the times that we need to be determined to remember.

To never forget the sweet moments.

To remember the journey.

To be grateful for the reality.

Birthdays have always been a time that draw me in to this process.  Parenting is HARD, but as each of my children get a little bit older, I can’t help but admire how beautiful our life really is.  It’s not perfect, but it’s ours, and it’s real, and that is far better than perfect will ever be.

Every once in a while, I get the opportunity to meet extraordinary people.  People who are just sweet and kind.  People who are strong in ways I have never had to be.  This sweet little one was born with a heart defect and after 2 surgeries (with another one on the horizon) and she is now a happy, thriving completely loved little angel.  I am so honored to be trusted with these moments and so excited to give this sweet family the gift of tangible memories.  Photography for me, has been, and always will be, first and foremost about relationships and memories.  These short years when we have little ones at home with us, depending, clinging and resting in their complete confidence in our love, go by way too fast.  I do personally look forward to the future, as my husband and I gain more freedom as they grow older, but I know without a doubt, that these moments while they are still little, will be ones I cherish for the rest of my life.

I do *this* because I don’t ever want to forget. <3

Goodness!  I have had the most amazing string of repeat clients back to back lately, and I am in complete heaven because of it!

There is NOTHING I take as a bigger compliment than for someone to go through a whole session with me, from the very beginning, (planning, prep, communication and styling) shoot the actual session, and then to the end, (editing, delivery, product selection and delivery) to then RETURN to me and do it again.  It communicates complete satisfaction in a job well done.  It is an investment in me and their appreciation and confidence in my work.  This job is so personal.  It is an expression of my heart and emotions for all the moments I wanted to make tangible with my own children, but was not able.

I want my images to be beautiful, yes…  But more than that, I want them to help you relive a memory, so personal, that only you posses it.  I want them to make you remember so well that you can smell their hair, hear their sounds, and feel their weight as you held them.  Because that is what it really is about right?  Photos hold so much value to us, because they enable us to make our memories tangible, so we don’t have to worry that the details and moments will be forgotten.

Three years later and they are now four. <3

Our next adventure!

We have had so many adventures so far… When we moved to Alabama 7 years ago, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be a successful photographer, have 5 kids, home school them, be planting a berry patch, or a fruit orchard, have bee hives, chickens AND about to build a farm house on 17 acres of land…

Our family is finally complete, and in less than 2 weeks we will be moving out of the only home 3 of my kids have ever known, and in to an apartment close to my favorite photography location.  Our land.

This video is to help us remember right now, before everything changes. Our dreams are on our doorstep and I can’t wait to document every beautiful detail along the way!

Make sure to SUBSCRIBE to get future updates as our dreams grow even bigger! <3

This little guy was just perfection.  His mama wanted a natural feel to his session and it is honestly my favorite way to do a in home newborn photo session.  This little boys family loves adventure and travel and once you see his nursery, I have a feeling you will fall instantly in love, just like I did.  He is their “little explorer” taking them on a brand new adventure.

Family photography will always be my first love, but the more Newborns I get to photograph, the more I am really beginning to fall in love with this genre as well.  <3

His daddy built that wall in his nursery by hand.  He said it was like putting a puzzle together, but you have to create every single piece!  Five different tones of wood and a lot of time later, and the coolest nursery wall I have ever seen was created.  It is even more gorgeous in person.  I can’t think of a better place to have the family portion of their photo shoot.

This little boy is so insanely loved…  I can’t wait to see how he grows and the adventures he gets to experience with his parents.

As much as I love the intimacy of in home newborn sessions, I have been dreaming of outdoor newborn photography for quite a long time.  I have finally figured out all of the details and I can’t wait to show you what I am planning.  I am anxiously waiting on the wildflowers to bloom.

Dark kitchens and crappy light…

Hello!

It has been WAY TOO LONG since my last personal post.  I am sure the 5 kids, homeschooling, busy season, the holidays, an autoimmune diagnosis and a teething baby have something to do with it… lol

It is what it is, and I will try and do better. (but no promises) ;-)

So I joined a “Project 52” this year.  There aren’t any weekly themes and the only rules are that you submit 2 images each week that were taken that same week of your own personal life.  I decided to join as a way to stay accountable.  My own family’s photos sadly, fell through the cracks this past year.  We had our last baby this past year (who is now ALREADY 7 months old!) and we will be moving out of our home and in to a rental soon, to get ready to build on our 17 acres of land.  So many changes and adventures are coming our way, and I desperately want to document it.  This is our story, with our completed family, and the first step towards so many of our dreams will be happening this year.

The last time I participated in a 52 week project, I lasted until week 22 and then fizzled miserably.  Since then I have thought “if I’m not going to finish, whats the point?”, until I was going through personal photos a couple months ago…  You know what?  Some of those shots I took in the first 22 weeks are some of my FAVORITES!  Who cares that I didn’t finish!?!  I got some precious shots I would never have otherwise been motivated to take, that represented us, and perfectly documented them.  This year, I will need all the accountability I can get. lol.

One of the reasons I am so excited for our future home (which isn’t built yet) is that it will have LIGHT!  Currently, our home has the kitchen and living area in the middle of the house.  There is very little natural light, and as you know, I love light!  I can’t help but pick up my camera when the light is beautiful, but on the other hand, it is really hard for me to get inspired when the light is crappy.  Add in 5 kids worth of messes, and my house is just about the least inspiring place for me to take photos in the entire world. lol

The problem though, is that we live our entire life in the kitchen and living room!

Last week I was scrolling Instagram (Are you following Jenni M Photography, Jenni M Designs, and my personal account?) and had the thought “I can’t wait to take sink bath photos in our new house!”  Just as quickly as the thought came, I realized, “I won’t have a baby by the time we finally get the house built!” :-(  Time never slows down…  As close as we are to my dream of a light filled, more minimalist inspired home, my baby just won’t wait that long.

I have to document our “now” right NOW or else it will be lost.  I can’t document her rubber band wrists, the fascination of dripping water, her back rolls and the way she kept licking the water off her lips like it was a special treat in a year, because it will be gone.  forever.

So the light…  I had to figure something out…  I loaded the dishwasher (because I ALWAYS have dishes in my sink) cleaned the sink, filled the sink and got my camera ready.

I knew our crappy florescent bubble light on the kitchen ceiling wasn’t going to cut it.

I then turned it off to see if that would work.  Nope.  Too dark.

Then I tried the LED light by itself.  Nope. Too harsh.

Then I grabbed the milk jug, put it in front of the LED light and turned on the overhead light as well.  Yup, that will do.

My house wasn’t picked up, my other 4 kids kept trying to “help” and the rest of my kitchen still needed to be cleaned, but I kept telling myself “If they don’t turn out, I don’t have to share them anywhere.  They are about her, nothing else.”

And you know what happened?  I freaking love them!  I can’t even tell you how much my heart hurts at the thought that I was just going to not take them because I didn’t have a beautiful sink with a window behind it.  They aren’t perfect, but they are our “right now” and that is priceless to me.

So if you are still hanging in there and have read this far…

Stop waiting until your life looks perfect.  Stop waiting until your house looks better, walls are painted, clothes are clean, kids are easier, floors are clear, weight is lost…

Because as much as I believe professional photography is worth every penny, I also believe your every day moments need to be documented too.  Who cares if they are crappy cell phone photos!  If you take 20 and only 1 “turns out”, THAT’S OK!  Photos are about remembering.  We love them so much because they bring back memories.  If you want to learn how to better use your cell phone for every day moments, I can’t recommend the Every Day Artistry guide enough.  It’s beautifully written, and has so many great tips on how to get better images from your camera phone.

So what does my life look like?  I am truly excited to share some peeks and highlights with you over the course of this year.  You are welcome to join me in the Project 52 as well (hosted by the same photographer that wrote the guide I linked above)!  You don’t have to be a “pro photographer” to be a part of it.  Come document your life with me. <3

Huntsville & Madison Family Children Lifestyle Photographer Jenni M Photography – Boshers Newborn

It has been my pleasure to photograph this beautiful family twice over the past 2 months.  Two very different sessions celebrating such a precious story of growth and change. (Take a peek at their Family Maternity Session)

Their in home newborn session was easily one of my faves to date!  She had asked if we could work in some fresh flowers in to the session, and of course I said yes!  She said she would go get them, and have them ready. “Sounds good” I said, and I honestly didn’t think much more about it.

I arrived at there home to find two large boxes full of lush gorgeous seasonal flowers!!!

So long story short, I was in floral heaven.  This sweet babe slept pretty much the entire session and I got to cuddle a fresh little one for a few hours.

I love my job. <3
